Soweto Virtual Environment

CLIENT: SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY (SDSU)

The Soweto Virtual Environment (SVE) is a collaboration project between WITS Department of History, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Department of History at San Diego State University.

The SVE will culminate in an online book published through Stanford University Press that unpacks the history of human settlement in the area we now call Soweto.

A combination of high-resolution drone survey datasets and advanced lidar-derived 3D modelling were developed for key research sites across Soweto in support of the book.

Project Outputs:

  • Drone Survey Imagery & Spatial Datasets
  • Lidar-Derived 3D Model Vector Package
